The Sturch family in England has it's roots in the Cotswolds, on the
borders between Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire.
Many branches of the family can be traced back to a few individuals
who lived in Whichford, Ascott, Cherington, Stourton and Sutton-under-Brailes
in the late 1500's. At the same time there were Sturch families in Deddington
and Bicester, so it would be nice to assume that there was a common
ancestor who arrived in the area sometime in the late 1400's or early
1500's, but unfortunately this is probably impossible to prove. There
were also a few Sturch's in London in the early 1600's but they could
easily be descendants of the Cotswold Sturch's.
By the 1800's there were Sturch families in Shipston on Stour, Pillerton
Hersey, Swerford, Barcheston, Morton-in-Marsh, Wiggington, Adderbury,
Shutford, Souldern, Tredington and many more.
There are now Sturches
all over the world:
- In the early 1800's Richard Sturch (11 Apr 1791 - 13 Oct 1872)
arrived in America. He married Sarah Elizabeth Dean (08 Jul 1809
- 20 Jan 1874) on the 31st of August 1827 in Georgia, and they went
on to have eleven children. There are now hundreds of Richard and
Sarah's descendants living all over America.
- In the mid 1800's brothers Joseph Sturch (12 Mar 1831 - 06 Jan
1886) and Charles Sturch (22 Feb 1834 - 16 Sep 1913) went to Canada,
where they met and married Canadian girls.
- Around the same time John Sturch (c.1796 - 20 May 1873) went
to New Zealand although he took his whole family with him.
- There were many other Sturch men who disappeared off to make
new lives all around the world, including both my uncles!
